STUART CARNEY

SCA Principal

B.Arch; B.Eng(Mech); M.Arch

SCA was established in Perth, WA in 2024 by Stuart after working at several of the city's best known studios. With honours degrees in both architecture and engineering, he possesses a broad level of knowledge that is rare in the industry.

On a project-by-project basis, SCA collaborate with a small group of trusted professionals - interior designers, engineers, environmental consultants and others, as required by the individual needs of each client.

Specialisation & Project Size

SCA projects often focus on renovations and additions - merging the old  & the new - retaining the historical value of a period house while enhancing it with new, modern spaces. Often, the constraints associated with these projects serve as the starting point for the design process, leading to a very unique and personal solution.

SCA targets small to medium-sized projects with construction budgets ranging from (approximately) $250k - $2M.

Design Ethos

For a design to possess inherent quality it should balance function, clarity, and simplicity. The process of achieving this result is an exercise in identifying that which supports and enhances the client's goal, while eliminating all that is unnecessary. The design must work for the people who will use it, complimenting and supporting how they live, now and in the future. Stuart's approach is always to balance the practical functioning of a building with it's aesthetics; refining the design until these two distinct qualities naturally support each other.

The organisation of the building's program (i.e the plan layout) serves as the designs' foundation and is achieved by gaining a careful understanding of the client's lifestyle. It is through this process of understanding that the ideas and opportunities begin to emerge. Then, the aesthetic quality is developed through a careful consideration of materials, details and the treatment of light.

The spaces we design are typically open and well-connected to the outdoors. The variety of materials and colours are kept minimal to allow the buildings' form to take central focus, and to promote a sense of uncluttered calm.

Strongly influenced by the best of 20th century modernism, rational order and strong geometry are hallmarks. It is a conviction that a house is made beautiful not just through its form or style, but through the thinking that underpins it and the quality of the craftsmanship that brings it to life.
